Mastering can be a confusing issue.  It involves a series of dynamics and tonal processing to add warmth and definition to all areas of the mix.  It is not simply making the track as loud as possible.  Have a listen to the examples below to get an idea of the difference mastering can make.

X Lion Tamer – I Said Stop (Neon Hearts EP)

Tony came to me needing a fresh pair of ears to address what really needed doing.  I made sure the masters were nice and full with a deep punchy bass and sweet top end using some linear phase eq to sparkle up the vocoded vocals.

The Kays Lavelle – Aftermath (Live Recording)

This band play really delicate songs with epic builds and a big dynamic range. In the mastering process I made sure I didn’t over compress the track so the rises and falls of the music were kept in tact.

Kerrie Lynch - Something New (Little Tin In My Bag EP)

Acoustic music can be in danger of sounding weal so it’s important to give it presence and urgency.  Kerrie’s catchy guitar and double tracked vocals we’re brought out by the use of multiband opto compression to enhance the intimacy of the recording.

Steve Heron - Wee Blondie (Honest One)

Steve’s music needed lots of punch and warmth so I made sure he got it!  Some sweet tube compression did the job nicely which I coupled with some mid-range harmonic exciters to add definition to the guitar work.
